Database Building and Your Online Success

It's no secret that building a database of website customers and visitors can give you access to dramatic benefits. Even your existing traffic flow can generate additional benefits.

However, how do you generate a database for use in Internet marketing? How do you find the names and email addresses that you need for promotional tools? While purchasing lists of potential leads may seem like a viable option, there is a way to generate a database without spending additional money.

The first step is to realize that your existing traffic is your greatest asset. Driving fresh traffic to your site is the job of other marketing tools; building a database of visitors, however, can result in return business and customer longevity. How do you do this?

Simply put, you create an opt-in mailing list with double opt-in features. What is an opt-in mailing list and why should you use one?

If you create an area for an opt-in mailing list directly on your website's main page stating "Sign up and receive special monthly offers and information about products you're interested in" or something similar, you'll be surprised at the number of visitors who sign up.

Everyone loves to receive special deals, insider information and notification of special events. In addition, when you add an opt-in list in this form, it lends credence to your professionalism and helps engender consumer trust.

You must also send an immediate welcome message when a consumer signs up for your list. Welcome them to the "newsletter" or program and then provide links to valuable information, up-sell them with special product promotions and more. In addition, you must create a monthly newsletter (or other periodically produced promotion) featuring the options that the consumer selected.

These can be very simple, such as showcasing monthly "specials," current deals, etc. They can also be more complex, in the sense of utilizing customer provided information to create tailored content for the individual consumer.

Regardless, the first step is to create the opt-in list and integrate all responses into your database. You will be surprised by just how quickly that database grows. However, in order to realize maximum profitability and ROI, you will have to combine your database creation efforts with other marketing strategies.

Remember, your database only works once the client visits your site and signs up; you will have to use other methods to get them to visit, in the first place.
